Sport and Exercise Physicians: specialist doctors for the active body.

In Australia, a Sport and Exercise Physician is a specialist medical doctor — a Physician — with advanced training in the diagnosis and non-surgical management of musculoskeletal injury, chronic pain, and the medicine of exercise itself.

What is a Sport and Exercise Physician?

A Sport and Exercise Physician is a specialist doctor recognised by the Australian Medical Council. Like cardiologists or rheumatologists, we have completed many years of training beyond medical school to become consultants in our field. The award of Fellowship from the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) is among the most respected qualifications attainable in the field of Sports Medicine in the world.

To better understand the field, you can watch this short lecture on Sport and Exercise Medicine , or learn more about Dr Samra's experience and clinical background. Dr Samra works alongside other world-class leaders in the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine, and the pathway to Fellowship has six demanding stages:

Who should see a Sport and Exercise Physician?

There is wide diversity in what we see. Sport and Exercise Physicians manage all musculoskeletal complaints — from sudden injury to long-standing degeneration — in everyone from children to older adults, elite athletes to office workers, footballers to dancers, and everyone in between.

Many of our patients are referred by their physiotherapist, surgeon or GP, which we prefer as it allows shared clinical context. You do not need to be an athlete of any kind.

What we specialise in

While we see the full breadth of musculoskeletal medicine, the areas in which a specialist Sport and Exercise Physician adds the most value are:

01
Severe or unusual conditions, or conditions that do not seem to be improving despite previous treatment.
02
Difficult-to-diagnose conditions where reaching an exact diagnosis has proven tricky for other clinicians.
03
Helping people avoid surgery wherever possible and clinically safe to do so.
04
Non-surgical management of arthritis and back pain, including evidence-based conservative care pathways.
05
Helping people stay active despite injury, chronic conditions and physical limitations.
06
Medical investigation, screening and injectable therapies, including ultrasound-guided procedures performed in clinic.
07
Prescribing safe exercise for people living with other chronic medical diseases — cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory and musculoskeletal.
